Throwback Thursday | Grateful Dead & Santana – Stella Blue

On January 26, 1993 the Grateful Dead celebrated Chinese New Year's at Oakland Coliseum Arena in Oakland, California. Guitarist Carlos Santana, a Bay Area fixture who came up from the ranks as the same time as The Dead, sat in for the post Space/Drums section of the evening's second set as well as the encore.

Santana, who had sat in with the band a number of times over the years, wound up guesting on "The Other One" > "Stella Blue" > "Turn On Your Lovelight" to end the closing stanza plus the "Gloria" encore." For "Stella Blue," GD guitarist Bob Weir taught Carlos the chords on the fly. Carlos unleashes a beautiful solo towards the end of the version and an audience member captured fan-shot video of the guest spot. Watch how it went down with soundboard audio thanks to LoloYodel:
