Just stringing you along…

Haas Kowert Tice: You Got This

Bluegrass is one of those genres that seems to just be constantly reloading with new talent and we are in the midst of a pretty strong surge of young pickers, fiddlers and the like. Take NYC-centric Haas Kowert Tice who have been playing together on and off for years, but just put out their debut album, You Got This, last summer. Brittany Haas plays fiddle with Crooked Still and Paul Kowert plays bass in the Punch Brothers while Jordan has found work writing and playing guitar with many top players along the way. Together they find their own unique voice, plenty of respect for the traditions of the genre while imparting their own directions and moods throughout.

Steve Dawson: Rattlesnake Cage

Seems like half the music I listen to these days could’ve just been recorded by a guy with a guitar in his bedroom or on a porch somewhere. That’s definitely the feel you get from Steve Dawson’s excellent 2014 release, Rattlesnake Cage. Dawson proves himself to be an expert acoustic guitar player, laying down virtuoso ditties and dense melodies that are finger-pickin’ good. There are, in fact, a wide range of guitars and styles over the course of this record, but all of it is pure expert, to-the-roots playing.

Three Bells: Mike Auldridge, Jerry Douglas, Rob Ickes

Here’s something special: Mike Auldridge, who played with the Seldom Scene as well as with the likes of Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt, is one of the pioneers of the Dobro and passed down the mantle to the well-decorated and well-traveled Dobro masters Jerry Douglas and Rob Ickes. Ickes and Douglas visited Auldridge who stricken with cancer, to play with him and support him. The sessions, completed shortly before Auldridge passed, turned out better than any of them could have imagined and were released in the fall as Three Bells. This is three masters of their craft working together to play some standards, jam a little and just make some music. The results are something special on many levels. Worth a listen.
