Leftover Salmon, those accomplished creators of a mighty bluegrass and bohemian jam fusion, kicked up some warm Maui sand during four early-January shows in Hawaii. On January 10, the band descended upon the fanciful Maui Tropical Plantation for the first of two shows. One of the original post-Grateful Dead “jam bands” that have been at it for 25 years, Colorado-based Leftover Salmon reveled in the mid- winter performance setting, which included evening temperatures hovering around 70, with a delightful, prevailing topical breeze. The Plantation’s Mill House stage and wooden dance floor, both under cover, were part of an open-air venue, surrounded on three sides by a lush sweeping lawn and fanciful outdoor landscapes that combined tropical plants by the hundreds, a large lagoon, and water features galore, many of which joined native plants with giant pieces of farm equipment.

Led as they always have been by Vince Herman on acoustic guitar and vocals as well as Drew Emmitt on mandolin, guitar, and vocals as well as Andy Thorn (acoustic and electric banjos) and Greg Garrison (bass) with Alwyn Robinson (drums) rounding out the band – almost. Also in the mix, as he has been for almost a year now, was keyboardist Bill Payne, a member of rock royalty as a founding member of Little Feat, and whose Cajun/ragtime playing melds perfectly, and wonderfully accentuates, Leftover Salmon’s self-described polyethnic Cajun slamdance style

The band was in fine form during the night, pouring forth dozens of rip-snortin’ jams and grooves during the two sets, and the few hundred at the small venue, which included gnarly hipsters in their 20s and seasoned concert elders, all united in song, dance, weather and tropical cocktails.
