Widespread Panic Honors Chris Squire & Bill Withers At Red Rocks

Widespread Panic concluded this year's traditional three-night stand at Red Rocks in Morrison, Colorado on Sunday night. Yesterday's performance was the band's 48th consecutive sold-out show at the iconic outdoor venue and featured tributes to YES bassist Chris Squire, who recently passed away, and newly inducted Rock & Roll Hall Of Famer Bill Withers.

When in #Colorado ... Solo mission to #WideSpreadPanic at #RedRocks . Raddest venue ever.

Duane Trucks first and if all goes according to plan according to plan only, Red Rocks run as Widespread Panic drummer started off with a set that mixed classic originals and a double dose of The Band covers in "Ophelia" and "The Shape I'm In." Pianist CR Gruver of the New Orleans Suspects was the weekend's first guest as he added keys to "It Ain't No Use," a jam out of "Drums" and "Ribs & Whiskey" towards the end of Friday's second set. Opening night came to a close with a three-song encore that included two new songs - "Cease Fire" and "Jamais Vu" - as well as a cover of Tom Waits' "Goin' Out West."

On Saturday, Widespread Panic offered a career spanning show that featured a guest appearance from old friend Bill Bass on percussion for the start of a "Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys" > "Tie Your Shoes" > "Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys" encore. The run's second show also included a shout out to the Grateful Dead with a cover of "Cream Puff War" on the night Fare Thee Well started in Santa Clara. Last night's finale contained a handful of rarities as Panic dusted of "B of D" after 78 shows, "Breathing Slow" after 40 shows, "Degenerate" after 52 shows and "Vacation" after 38 shows. "Vacation" was part of a three-song encore that also included Widespread Panic's second-ever version of "Lean On Me" by Withers. The band also jammed on "The Fish" by YES as a likely tribute to Squire.

Widespread Panic kicks off a three-night stand in San Antonio on Thursday.
