Twenty Years Later | The 1995 Great Woods Harry Hood

Twenty years ago today Phish concluded a two-night stand at Great Woods in Mansfield, Massachusetts with a show that was broadcast on Boston's WBCN radio station. Included within the show was a standout "Harry Hood" that stands among the band's best takes on one of their earliest tunes.

"Harry Hood" usually ends with a jam section led by guitarist Trey Anastasio. However on July 1, 1995 Phish took a bit of a different route as keyboardist Page McConnell started the jam with a series of beautiful melodies. McConnell strung together one gorgeous melody after another while Trey played rhythm. Great Woods '95 was the only time Page led a large portion of "Harry Hood" in the over 300 times the song has been played. After a few wonderful minutes, the keyboardist went back to his traditional role of providing melodic support to Anastasio. Trey then patiently leads his mates towards a majestic climax. Around the 11-minute mark the guitarist lays down a triumphant lead which sets the stage for the frenetic peak. Thanks to the radio broadcast, recordings of Phish's performance at Great Woods on July 1, 1995 were spread far and wide quickly especially for those pre-broadband days.

Let's celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Great Woods Hood by listening in:
